Transmission plate recall Empty
PostSubject: Transmission plate recall   Transmission plate recall EmptyMon Sep 10, 2012 8:28 am

Looking for opinions on a recall. I received from jeep for my 2010 JK.

"the transmission skid plate may allow debris to collect in the undercarriage of the vehicle under certain driving conditions. If an excessive amount of debris collets in the undercarriage, the catalytic converter could ignite the debris, causing an underbody fire without warning."

"the dealer will replace the transmission skid plate with a transmission skid bar."

I feel as though that the skid plate would provide better off road protection than a bar. The change relieves Jeep of responsibility from fire but makes me more susceptible to damage. The chances of a fire are probably less than the chance of trans damage.

Thoughts welcome.

I have a liberty, but in my opinion, I would keep the skid plate because you want the better protection, BUT i would also make sure I check the underside every now and then for the build up of debris. my thought is that as long as you keep it clean you shouldnt have a problem!!! Very Happy

Not sure what the bar design looks like, to me it would be going backwards to what a skid plate was designed for. Me personally, I would keep the skid plate in place and do what KJ said, keep it clean under there. If this is a concern of yours you could cut a relief in the skid plate under the converter to allow heat and debris to more easily escape.

I agree with Both KJ and T-Case. As you said the skid plate provides more protection and I would think the bar could definitely be more trouble off road. I like T-Case's idea about cutting a relief in the skid plate. That and keeping it clean should do the trick!

What say you Slimer????
