| Hey everyone! The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is planning to close the Greenridge Loop within the next couple of months. There was a meeting by DNR to consider the future of ORV trails in Maryland on March 23. The DNR is accepting comments on the future of the Greenridge loop and ORV trails in Maryland until April 30th. I would ask our members to go to the Maryland DNR website (even if you are not a Maryland resident) and ask DNR to consider keeping Greenridge open and developing a larger trail system in Maryland. Website is www.dnr.state.md.us. Click on the trees tab and you will see the information on how to comment. Thanks! | |

| Thank you for posting this, Sam! Samantha and Dennis have been looking into this and we are all going to try to find out what we can do to help. I'm writing a couple people tonight about it. Sam's been reading up on it all, etc etc. We believe that several united clubs could very well make a difference with this. ................Or maybe no one steps up. But if you call yourself a member of the offroad community and DON'T care about this, you need to re-evaluate your 'hobby'. We want to find out as much as we can. We hope more people will write/leave comments. So PLEASE use the link and see what's up, leave messages, etc. | |

| Well, here it is - - http://www.dnr.state.md.us./forests/ wrote:
ORV Trail Status Effective immediately, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has permanently closed three of the State’s off-road vehicle (ORV) trails; the Green Ridge Trail at Green Ridge State Forest, Chandler Trail at Pocomoke State Forest, and Poplar Lick Trail at Savage River State Forest. These trails had been temporarily closed pending the results of a forest certification audit. The decision is based on the results of environmental assessments conducted by the Department and the results of our recent forest certification audit. That audit completed last week is part of the State’s effort to receive dual certification for all three western Maryland State Forests — a move that will protect the $950 million western Maryland forest products industry, which employs 9,200 people.
Sounds like hooey to me. I think the real reason is… - http://www.dnr.state.md.us./forests/ wrote:
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as International Year of Forests to celebrate the sustainable management of the world’s forests. Organizations throughout Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay watershed have taken this opportunity to encourage the celebration of forests for people. To add to the celebration the Forest Service has developed a poster contest for all 5th graders in the State and an opportunity for everyone to submit a photo of their favorite Maryland Tree Lined Street
Guess that kills our trip! Do we want to still do something for that weekend? Do we want to try George Washington National Forest?

| OK, so I got this email the other day… I should be able to shift my schedule, or even take a day off to go to a couple of these. Is the board OK with members under the banner of A/O being part of the ORV Stakeholders group? Is there anyone in Maryland or Southern PA that would be interested/able to do this with me? - Quote :
- Dear ORV Stakeholder -
I am writing to thank you for your time, attention and thoughtful input toward the ORV process thus far; and seek your interest in serving the process going forward. As promised, the Department is now preparing to finalize the named members for the ORV Stakeholder Workgroup. This group will guide us in determining possible locations for new ORV trails in MD. As mentioned in our last message, we intend to meet quarterly with a goal of identifying at least one new trail system in the next twelve months. This will require several on-site meetings in the field at locations worthy of consideration. To see these sites in person we will also need to meet during the day and generally on weekdays to avoid conflicts with landowners/managers-- so please consider those facts before submitting your name as a candidate to the group.
I will lead the ORV Stakeholder Workgroup with other DNR team-members supporting our efforts. Please reply with a short note expressing your interest in being named to the workgroup and the name of the organization and/or 'philosophy' represented by the group. We are generally looking for individuals who represent organized groups/associations/clubs in and around MD so please send one named representative (and perhaps one alternate) for each group. This workgroup will include non-riders but our focus will be on development of new ORV trail riding opportunities so please keep that in mind as it will mean a majority of members will be trail riders (including larger street-legal 4x4's, atvs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes -- dual-purpose and otherwise; and snowmobiles).
On behalf of the Department, thank you for your time and please reply with your note of interest by May 26, 2011 so we can compile the final membership and circulate our selections shortly thereafter.

| We'll have to play it by ear as far as trips go. Chris and I are putting the house on the market as of tuesday. Neither of us have rigs to wheel. We're in a huge transition period right now. Of course, we plan to do things, it's just hard to plan too-too far ahead. We encourage everyone to still attend, or alter the plans to meet what everyone is able to do. As for the Stakeholder thing...I have to read the post closer, but we're never opposed to being involved in something that important!!! We have to get together soon for a meeting!!! I promise I will find a weekend and see if it works for the other board members! | |
