PostSubject: cheap cold air intake   cheap cold air intake EmptySat Jan 22, 2011 11:49 am

this is one of the last projects my son and i did together on my wifes 99 tj. the air intake is on the proper side (cold side of engine) so no air line mods are neccesary. we used a piece of styrofoam wall insulation we found at our last rental home, so this mod cost zero dollars and only took about 15 minutes. we yanked off the restrictive factory intake horn, for a gain of about 2 1/2 times more air intake over stock. then we measured and cut the foam and shoved it in between the filter box/intake area and engine (i plan to cover the foam some day). there's an increase in mpg from 1 to 2 mpg......depending on how deep into the skinny pedal my wife gets.

Very “cool”…
Tripped across this thread – don’t know why the little icon thingy wasn’t blue!?

I did something similar, will take some pics and post up. At this point, I still have the horn on (was worried about moisture), but was intending on using 4” PVC.

Nice but TJ is right. Water could be a issue. Mine is a open K&N on a tube. I have been through some water at all speeds and have not had a issue yet though...

Here’s mine…
It was also “free” as everything was lying around the house (and the K & N filter was in it when I bought it). Some tin with reflective insulation on it was bolted to the box and wrapped around the ducting. Crossing and cutting the hole in the hood was the most “fun”. Actually, there’s about $7 in the plastic hood vent trim.

At some point, I do want to remove the box tube and replace it with 4” PVC. I was thinking about what Chris said, and Paula has an open K & N as well. Water is going to splash up on the filter, can’t be much worse that getting water in the box – most will still be stopped by the filter and it will drain out the factory drain holes in the box… still, think I’m going to use some pipe with some 45deg bends.

The water thing seems to be pot luck.

Some people get hydrolocked, some people don't.

Of course, the variables include whether your "water" is a puddle that you simply splash through with little under the hood, or, more of a crossing, with sloshing against the firewalls, etc.

Very Happy

I tend to drive around "Decks Awash", akin to a WWII sub making an attack run with just the conning tower/deck cannon exposed....a bit too often to have less than a snorkel type intake above the water line.

I have been with budz with open element air filters with "splash shields" that hydrolocked on ordinary puddles that they just hit wrong and got a slug of water in a bad spot....and budz who were headlight deep in the Pine Barrens with open filters and got out unscathed....

....But there's more open filter guys who hydrolocked than I can shake a stick at.

I'm not sure that shaking a stick at them would do anything productive, and, considering they had hydrolocked their engines, my actions might be viewed as unfairly antagonistic and unsympathetic, so I will NOT shake a stick at them....

....But I might use the stick to point out to others the risks that the hydrolocked guys thought they were immune from.

big grin

her jeep doesn't see submarine duty....lol. i am thinking about fabbing up a nylon cover for the hole if i can track down that old pair of pantyho's that i fell over a few weeks ago. i'm figuring it'll act as a pre-filter and help block water. the only time this jeep gets wheeled is when i sneak out and play in the snow with it (when she's not looking)

Cool idea! Let us know how it works… I used a nylon on our dryer to vent inside during the winter in a previous home. Works good in that application.

LOL

They make hydrophobic socks that allow air through, but not water...if you slip one over your intake, and get sloshed .... you can still stall out from a lack of air, but at least you won't chug a slug of hydrolock-aide.

Very Happy

Well, no, no boot, just a sock...if you put a boot over it/the sock in it...the air can't get through........
