PostSubject: OK, Now What Do I Do?   Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:07 pm

My 35s showed up late today cheers ! I mounted the first one on a wheel, but have not been able to set the bead. I tried the ratchet strap trick but that was no help. I'm a little leery of doing the starting fluid trick, unless I run out of other ideas. I'm gonna try pulling the valve core and see if I can overwhelm it with air, but my compressor ain't so great at CFMs, so I'm not holding out much hope there. The tires are Super Swamper 35X10.5X15. Any ideas?

I would just blow them on the rim by using starting fluid it is the fastest way.....But first just mount on truck so it cant get away from ya..Be careful though....

Problem solved, $65 gone, 4 mechanics at the local Mr. Tire are mad at me. I fiddled with the tire a little more this morning, but eventually figured I was either gonna do the ether trick or take them to a tire shop. I decided to go to the tire shop, because I figured the ER would already be crowded with other people who blew their fingers off. Why should I add to that carnage? Anyway I took one mounted (not yet seated) tire and rim, and another tire to the local tire shop, and challenged their manliness and they took the bait, saying stuff like, "That guy's stoopid! Any idiot could set the bead on this thang!" They told me they'd only charge for three tires since I already had one mounted on the rim. I paid them up front so it would be harder for them to give up on it and send me home and they had at it. One guy has the brilliant idea to use a ratchet strap, which I told them I already tried, but heck, I paid 'em $65 I might as well get some entertainment out of it. Well they ratcheted and they grumbled and ratcheted some more but it didn't help. At this point, the manager says, "Why don't Leroy here take yew to yer place in the comp'ny truck, and yew cin git them thar udder tars whahl we take care a this'un?". I think they just wanted me out of the shop so they could mount a more violent attack on tire #1. Well, me and Leroy took the truck to my place and grabbed the other 2 tires and headed back. When we got there, they were just getting #1 seated. They claimed that they took the tires outside in the sunshine and blocked them open with whatever they could find handy, and the warmth of the sun softened them up and gave them a new, wider attitude. I think they probably had at 'em with a torch to soften 'em up, but they didn't want me to witness it. Anyhow, they sat the other tires out in the sun, and I went into the waiting room and read the paper and took a nap (I'm old...It's what old guys do). Rosco the manager came in an hour or so later, much like the doctor comes into the waiting room to tell you you're the proud father of a new baby, and woke me from my nap, proudly announcing that the job was done. Sure enough, here comes Leroy driving around the front with my LJ all decked out in new 35s! I grabbed the keys and flew out the door, hopped in and drove off before they could pull at my heart strings about how hard it was, and that maybe it should've been more like $165. On the way home it handled much better than before, but I still feel something just a tad out of kilter, and it drifts a little to the right. Maybe it's road crown, or possibly the front axle isn't parallel to the rear. Maybe I'll have a look tomorrow, but maybe not.

Thanks to all for the suggestions and thanks to you Tom, for the offer of help, but I figured by time I got to your place and back, I would've spent more than $65 in fuel, and I'm trying to stay pretty close to home as Mrs. AutoDoc is only seven days recovered from her surgery. Anyhow, I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday and pray that God bleeses you and gives you what you need. Hope to see you all out on the trails soon!

I know this is kind of late, and in an old thread, but I am a recovering post wh*re from another forum.

I just went through pulling a tire off of a rim about 4 times inside of a week because I have no idea what i am doing. One time nothing I tried would set the bead, using a 7 year old kmart blue light special air pump. So I put a ratchet strap around the tire, and stood it up. Then with air being pumped in, I jumped up and down on the tread. It was fun because the people in the Kmart parking lot were looking at me like I had lost my mind. I get alot of my tire repair equipment from the Big K. Tire slime, doesnt work for side walls, Bike tube patch kits, They dont work for mud terrains, Side wall patch kits, air pumps. Things you should buy nice quality parts for. Anyways, it finally set after about 5th jump. Give it a shot.
