York also has a program for Xmas for children who come to the mission for Xmas dinner, service and gifts.
It's a
back-pack or duffle bag drive. They have it split into groups:
Age 0-1...ages 2-3...ages 4-6...ages 7-9...10-12 and ages 13-18 Also, male or female specific.
If you are interested in filling a backpack for a needy child, please PM me for more details and suggestions
on what is needed to add to these bags for age specific gifts for the boys and girls.
During our tour of the mission, Kathy (our guide and the mission's PR/Volunteer Director) told us of one
incident, the week of Xmas (just a few days before) one year that she was working alone in the office and
she received a call from a woman who was crying and asking for help, as her husband had been layed off
from his job and she was unable to work and they had no way to give gifts to their children. Kathy said she
would try to help, but being so close to Xmas, wasn't sure she'd be able to have the things the children were
looking for. While talking, the bell rang at the front door of the mission and she asked the woman to hold as
she went to answer the door.
When she opened the door, there was a man dressed very nicely in a suit and he has two big boxes with him
He said that he took his children to Toys R Us and had them pick out a bunch of toys to give to the mission!!!
She accepted the boxes and thanked him and went back to the phone. She asked the woman what her kids
were hoping to have for Xmas and the woman said that her one daughter was a teen and loved girly stuff like
manicure sets, hair stuff, etc etc. And her other daughter was a tom-boy and wanted a Razor Scooter. Kathy
told the woman that she would do her best and hung up.
Out of curiosity, she went to the boxes and opened them up....sure enough, among all the toys inside, there
were 2 scooters and a HUGE manicure set (the biggest one she'd ever seen) adn she immediately called the
woman back....they cried...tears of joy and thankfulness!
